Nicoletta Cooking with the Duchess

A Day Cooking with the Duchess is not simply a Sicilian cooking lesson in an extraordinary location.

It’s an inspirational and rewarding experience in a fabulous 18th century Palazzo by the sea, the last home of Prince Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, author of the world-famous novel The Leopard.

What better surroundings to begin a captivating journey into the wondrous world of Sicilian culture and food? The Duchess of Palma will accompany you in the morning to the colourful Il Capo market to find only the freshest ingredients of the season, and will illuminate some of the myriad hidden treasures of exotic Palermo, one of the most intriguing cities of the Mediterranean. At the market you will see and smell the array of wonderful freshly caught fish, the just picked fruit and vegetables, the vibrant colours of the famous Sicilian citrus, the spices and the wood-oven baked bread topped with sesame seeds.

Back at the Palazzo, you will be taken to the organic gardens on the luscious terrace to pick fresh herbs, flowers and lemons that will enhance both the flavours and the uniqueness of your dishes. Then, in the welcoming kitchen, you will create a mouthwatering Sicilian menu under the Duchess’s expert guidance. Afterwards you will enjoy the fruits of your labour in the comfort of the Palazzo’s elegant dining room. White-gloved waiters will serve you the delicious Sicilian dishes you have created.

To end the day in style you will be taken on a fascinating tour of this truly magnificent, lovingly restored Palazzo, where you will have the rare privilege of seeing the original handwritten manuscript of the Prince’s enduring masterpiece, The Leopard. Alternatively, you can book a tour of the palace separately for €40.

Monreale Cathedral.jpg

If there is anything you have to see while you’re in Sicily - this is it. I love Monreale for the spectacular views of Palermo, nestled in the valley with the surrounding mountains contrasting the city below.

The stunning, little scenic cobbled streets that wind through the town of Monreale make for picture perfect moments, with all the alleys being alive with potted plants and colourful window shutters.

The reason that this is at the top of my must-see list is for the wonder of all wonders: Monreale Cathedral, dating back to the 1100s and still almost exactly as it was with incredible mosaics on a gold ground and its extraordinary cloister, the cathedral can rightly claim a place in the highest ranks of Europe's art history.

The golden glow and the energy that resonates within the cathedral just takes my breath away everytime I visit, so I would love you to have the same experience.

Our trusted English speaking tour guide will go into more detail so you can get a true feel for the history of this spectacular wonder and we will arrange the taxi services to whisk you to the top of Mount Caputo so you don’t have to deal with the hot, crowded buses.

Guided Tour of Monreale Cathedral

6 The Palatine Chapel.jpg

A walking tour of Palermo by one of our trusted English speaking guides. Butera 28 Apartments is located in the heart of the historic centre of Palermo, in the Kalsa quarter, from the the Arabic Halisa, the elected citadel of the Emirs.

Everywhere you look is just so full of history, culture and scenic views and that is why I really recommend the walking tour. You’ll get all the information as you are guided through the city.

Take this tour on the first day of your arrival so that you get a real feel for the city to feel at ease exploring later by yourself.

On the tour you will visit the most significant monuments, cultural and artistic sites of the city. Many of them are inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List (Palermo’s Cathedral, San Giovanni degli Eremiti, San Cataldo and Martorana).

Then make your way up to the unbelievable Royal Palace with the Palatine Chapel for a guided tour within.
